The Qala Belvedere is one of the most scenic public viewpoints in Gozo, located on the eastern edge of the village of Qala. The word belvedere literally means “beautiful view”, and this spot is widely considered one of the finest panoramic outlooks on the island.

Location & Setting

  • Positioned above Mgarr Harbour, the main ferry gateway to Gozo.

  • Faces directly toward:

    • Comino,

    • the Blue Lagoon area,

    • and the northern coast of Malta.

It sits along the village edge near residential streets and traditional farmhouses, making it easily accessible on foot or by car.

The View

What makes the Belvedere special is the uninterrupted panorama:

✅ Mgarr Harbour below with ferries arriving and departing.

✅ Comino’s cliffs and the Blue Lagoon waters.

✅ Malta’s northern coastline in the distance.

✅ Sunrise and sunset lighting across the channel.

On clear winter days visibility can extend very far across the Mediterranean.

Many photographers consider it one of Gozo’s best sunrise locations.

Design & Atmosphere

The viewpoint includes:

  • a limestone balustrade terrace,

  • benches for seating,

  • landscaped areas and pedestrian access.

Unlike dramatic cliff viewpoints elsewhere in Gozo, Qala Belvedere feels:

  • calm,

  • open,

  • residential rather than wild.

Locals frequently use it for evening walks

Experience Throughout the Day

Morning

Quiet atmosphere with strong morning light over Comino — popular with walkers and photographers.

Afternoon

Views of harbour activity and ferries.

Evening

Very popular with residents watching sunset colours across the channel

Tourism & Accommodation Value

For nearby accommodation owners, proximity to the Belvedere is often highlighted because it offers:

  • walking-distance scenic attraction,

  • peaceful surroundings,

  • strong visual identity for marketing photography.

Interesting Local Detail

Despite being one of the best viewpoints in Gozo, it remains relatively uncrowded compared with:

  • Dwejra,

  • Ramla Bay viewpoints,

  • Xlendi cliffs.

This adds to its appeal for guests seeking quiet premium experiences.
